2017 Outdoor Sculpture

Location: On Court and High Streets outside the Courthouse Galleries Courtyard

Since 2005, The Portsmouth Art & Cultural Center has annually sought proposals for outdoor sculptures to display within the enclosed garden courtyard. Crawford A. Mann, III, the Joan & Macon Brock Curator of American Art at the Chrysler Museum of Art served as a juror for the 2017 exhibit. His selections include work by eight sculptures from across the United States that will go on display this spring. Featured is work by Abigail Cochran, VA; Jan Kirsh, MD; Jon Mason, VA; Pokey Park, AZ; Philip Smith, MD; Timothy Spurchise, VA; Kevin Vanek, MS, and Carl Wright, WV. The competition offers cash awards totaling more than $4,000 in Jurors Choice, Seawall art, Brancusi, Honorable Mention, and People’s Choice. Pick up a ballot at the front desk and cast your ballot to help determine which artwork and artists receive the People’s Choice Award. Voting closes on August 1st. To Face the Unknown: Portsmouth and the Great War

Location: Portsmouth Art & Cultural Center

The History Division of the Portsmouth Museums will present: To face the Unknown, an exhibit that examines the effects of the Great War here at home. Come and see images and artifacts that tell growth, naval expansion and community support. The exhibit focuses on how WWI changed Portsmouth through phenomenal grown and experience relating to the home front effort; new housing communities and the way the military installations in Portsmouth grew and changed to support the war – installations like the St. Julien’s Creek Ammunition Depot, which expanded to become the place where tens of thousands of sea mines were filled and shipped. Suzanne Stryk: Notes on the State of Virginia

Location: Portsmouth Art & Cultural Center

Notes on the State of Virginia, is a stunning collection that offers Virginia’s rich and diverse landscape through Geological Survey maps layered with drawings, writings and actually specimens of animal and plant life and organic materials. Stryk is often asked if she studied science, art, or both. “I wanted to be a field biologist,” she said. “These two interests have been playing tug-off-war all my life.” Art eventually won out and she graduated with a degree in art history and painting. “Art suits my need to interpret the natural world, to integrate science and spirit, fact with imagination. They are volunteers who have received extensive training under the auspices of Virginia Tech, Virginia State, and the Virginia Cooperative Extension Office to provide unbiased, research-based horticultural information, tips, techniques and advice to the community. The Great Chesapeake Bay Schooner Race

Location: Portside

The Great Chesapeake Bay Schooner Race promotes awareness of the Chesapeake Bay, maritime heritage and encourages preservation and improvement of the bay’s ecosystem. The public is invited to watch the Schooners as they arrive on Friday between noon and 4pm; however, all schooners will be available for external viewing the entire weekend. Schooners may be viewed dockside in Portsmouth on Saturday. Some may be open for tours. Education Program at 9:00 am where selected schooners host area students for a hands-on learning experience in Portsmouth.   Saturday enjoy the Sailors’ Evening and Sea Chantey Sing-along at 7:00 pm. This is a public gathering at North Landing Park for captains, crew, sponsors, volunteers and enthusiasts who want to enjoy some rousing – and sometimes bawdy – sea chanteys. Pavilion Truck Show: SUVs, Jeeps, Pickups (Late Models to Classics)

Location: Portsmouth Pavilion

Portsmouth Pavilion Plaza will be transformed into one of Virginia’s largest truck shows. Individual owners from throughout the region will display autos for public viewing. Late model, and classic trucks, Jeeps and SUVs will be on display along the plaza. Awards and trophies will be given for the top 30 vehicles, including best in show, best domestic build, bets Jeep build, best import build and more. The show atmosphere will be enhanced with vendors, concessions, truck related workshops, and family activities. This event is FREE and open to the public with free parking in the Portsmouth City lots. Judging begins at noon and ends at 3pm; award presentation begins at 3:30 pm. Tony Kenny is one of Ireland’s most beloved artists, having sung in countless musical productions such as Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat and Jesus Christ Superstar. Kenny started in the famous Jury’s Irish Cabaret for more than 20 years with Hal Roach (Irelan’d Legendary King of Blamey) and won many awards in for his work over the course of decades. 37th Annual Olde Towne Portsmouth Ghost Walk

Location: Trinity Graveyard

Based on the Jack-the-Ripper Walks in London, participants in the 35th annual Olde Towne GhostWalk will be treated to some of the most haunting stories of Portsmouth’s past. Guides take spectators on a walk past haunted houses and mansions of Olde Towne, a 20-square block, 500 building area on the National Register of Historic Places. At each house on the tour, actors in appropriate costume will retell the legends of ghostly visitations and things that go bump in the night. Cameras are welcome. Fall Festival: A Safe Trick-or Treat Event

Location: Hoffler Creek Wildlife Preserve

Join us for our fun, family-oriented, annual trick-or-treat event. Through crafts and games, learn about the creepy crawlies and spooky animals that live in the preserve. Take a walk through the spooky kids trail and explore a hay bale maze. Meet an animal ambassador from one of our local partners or go on a hayride. Festival participants are encouraged to come in costume, and we are especially wild about animal costumes, no masks please.
