The Chrysler Museum Comes to Portsmouth

The exhibitions Art that Asks the Big Questions: The Chrysler Museum Comes to Portsmouth and Glen McClure: New Work, Italy, Ireland.

During the Chrysler's closure for expansion, the VAC will present four collections of work from the Norfolk, Virginia museum. Large-scale 19th-century European oil paintings, including The Neophyte, Gustave Doré; La Desserte, Étienne Prosper Berne-Bellecour; and Lunatique à Etretat, Hugues Merle, will provide an interesting range of subjects. Complementing them are several bronze sculptures including Ugolino and His Sons, Jean Baptiste Carpeaux, and Lion Crushing a Serpent, Antoine Louis Barye. Many of these works previously belonged to Walter P. Chrysler, Jr., whose donations made the institution one of the major art museums in the southeastern United States.

Twenty mixed media prints by Scottish artist Eduardo Paolozzi will feature vintage, often humorous, designs from the late 1940s to the early 1950s. Additional works by American artists Robert Rauschenberg, Man Ray and Nam June Paik provide two and three-dimensional examples that exemplify the variant approaches of the contemporary age.

Chrysler Museum gallery hosts will be answering questions in the VAC galleries during the duration of the exhibition. A gallery guide will provide additional information.

The TCC VAC is located at 340 High Street, Olde Towne Portsmouth. Galleries are open 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily and are free and open to the public. For further information call (757) 822-1888 or go to the Center's website.
