Diane Bakaysa, Freedom from Bondage

7 PM - Sponsored by the Friends of the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard Museum, join us for the presentation "Freedom from Bondage" by historian and quilter Diane Bakaysa. Using reproductions of Civil War era quilts she handmade, Ms. Bakaysa discusses the spiritual bondage of American slavery. She will also talk about the history of physical bondage, culminating with the role of quilts & how they were used to aid slaves in their quest for freedom through the Underground Railroad.

BOO-yah! 5K and Little Monsters Fun Run

8 AM - The Port Norfolk Civic League is excited to present the first annual Port Norfolk BOO-yah! 5K and Little Monsters Fun Run on October 28, 2012. This race benefits the Port Norfolk Parks Fund and The Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia. Racers will zoom past some crazy, spooky and amazing houses…including the infamous MARYLAND MANSION which draws hundreds of thrill seekers each year with its incredible Halloween displays. Registration for the 5K is just $30 until October 1st when it will go up to $35. Register early to avoid the extra cost. 7:30 PM - America's beloved tenor Daniel Rodriguez was the New York City cop who helped bring the country an uplifting spirit of promise and hope with his stirring rendition of "God Bless America" after the September 11th terrorist attacks.

Accompanied by piano and bass, Daniel will be joined by his talented wife, soprano Maria Kavanaugh, who won praise from San Francisco critics as "the voice of a sorrowing angel" for her poignant portrayal in The Prince and the Pauper.

Moses J. Ezekiel, Civil War Soldier, Renowned Sculptor

4PM – Jewish Museum and Cultural Center - Moses J. Ezekiel, the first Jewish cadet to graduate from the Virginia Military Institute, fought as a Confederate solider as the Battle of New Market. This lecture will not only explore Ezekiel's life as a Jewish cadet and soldier, but also his rise to prominence as an internationally honored sculptor. Many of us have seen but not recognized theme as the worlds of distinguished Jewish artist. Not only does Ezekiel have ties to Tidewater Virginia, with direct descendants living here, but also his statuary is featured in the Norfolk Botanical Gardens. Presented by Colonel Keith Gibson.

Colonel Keith Gibson is the Executive Director of Museum Programs and Architectural Historian at the Virginia Military Institute. With an engineering degree from VMI and a tour of duty as a Naval Officer, he returned to VMI as Curator of Exhibits for the VMI Museum. He is co-author of the book "Moses Ezekiel: Civil War Soldier, renowned Sculptor."

Snow Wonders! Snow and Light Shows at the Children's Museum of Virginia

Coleman's Nursey Nativity Scene @MUMC

The nativity scene, from the famous Colemans Nursery Winter Wonderland display is now hosted in the chapel at Monumental United Methodist Church on the corner of Queen and Dinwiddie Streets in downtown Portsmouth.

Showing weekly on Fridays and Saturdays, 10am-8pm until December 29th. Admission is free and open to the public.

Port Norfolk has always loved its holidays, but something about the time after Thanksgiving and before New Year's is particularly magical!  The entire neighborhood gets into the holiday spirit and decorate their homes inside and out, making it a very festive and gorgeous sight.  This year, we are taking things up a notch ... there will be judged categories for the homeowners who go to extra lengths to make their home beautiful!

Rainbow Puppets Presents "The Night Before Christmas"

2 PM & 3 PM - One of the world's most beloved children's poems teams up with one of Hollywood's most beloved stars as legendary entertainer Mickey Rooney narrates The Night Before Christmas for Rainbow Puppet Productions.

This brand new re-telling of the holiday classic will premiere this season at the Children's Museum of Virginia. The production features an original score by Rainbow Productions founder David Messick.

Gingerbread House Workshop

6:30 - 8:00 PM - Start the holiday season off with a new family tradition. Transform gingerbread houses into edible winter wonderlands with a delicious assortment of candies and other treats, as sounds of the season fill the air. Don't forget to take a stroll down Gingerbread Alley to check out some gingerbread creations by local business and schools.

$35.00 member families; $40 non-member families
