Memoir Writing Class with Lisa Hartz

Location: Portsmouth Art & Cultural Center Everyone has a story to tell but often lack the guidance to write it down. Lisa Hartz will instruct this beginner’s writing class (no experience is necessary) for adult students who wish to celebrate and preserve memories both good and bad, using easy prompts and sharing experiences through writing. Lisa Hartz holds an MA in English Writing from Hollins University, and an MFA in Creative Writing from the University of Miami. She is former Director of The Muse Writers Center in Norfolk, VA, and current Director of the Seven Cities Writers Project. Lisa has been teaching writing classes for over ten years, including previous classes at the museum. The cost is $115 ($100 for Members). Please call 757-393-8543 to register.

Coast Guard City Celebration

Location: Harbor Center Pavilion (amphitheater) In December of 2010, the City of Portsmouth was designated a Coast Guard City. The Coast Guard selected Portsmouth due to the City’s nearly 200 years of support of the Coast Guard community. The City of Portsmouth celebrates this grand distinction each year with a community celebration. All events are free and open to the public (except 5K Run) Event Schedule:

  • 7:30 am- 8:30 am: 5K & Kids 1/2 Miler Sign In, Packet Pick-ups & Late Registration
  • 9 am: Food Trucks on site – New York Souvlaki & Food Dude

31st Annual Grand Illumination Parade

Location: Downtown Norfolk Come see the kickoff to Holiday’s in the City, on the streets of downtown Norfolk. It beings with the illumination of the downtown Norfolk and Olde Towne Portsmouth skylines followed by Hampton Roads most cherished event, the Grand Illumination Parade. The themed parade will travel down Main Street to Granby Street then travel north to Freemason Street crossing over to Boush Street and around to Waterside Drive. 4 – 8 pm: Origami Ornaments

Capture the essence of the holiday icons using simple paper folding methods to render Santa ornaments, wreaths, dreidels, and other season imagery.  These activities will be taught by an expert in this traditionally Japanese art form.  Origami decorations can festoon the home and make great gifts.
