Since 2015, Glen McClure has been capturing portraits in large – format B&W photos of workers who follow in the time – honored traditions of making their living in shipyards across our region. Register now for the 2017 P.A.L. Summer Camp hosted by the Portsmouth Police Dept. The camp will be at Emily Spong located at 2200 Piedmont Ave., Monday through Thursday from 8:30 e.m, to 5:00 p.m., beginning June 26th and ending August 11th. Registration is Only Open to Portsmouth Residents ages 5-13.

2017 Outdoor Sculpture

Location: Portsmouth Art & Cultural Center

Since 2005, The Portsmouth Art & Cultural Center has annually sought proposals for outdoor sculptures to display within the enclosed garden courtyard. Crawford A. Mann, III, the Joan & Macon Brock Curator of American Art at the Chrysler Museum of Art served as a juror for the 2017 exhibit. His selections include work by eight sculptures from across the United States that will go on display this spring. Featured is work by Abigail Cochran, VA; Jan Kirsh, MD; Jon Mason, VA; Pokey Park, AZ; Philip Smith, MD; Timothy Spurchise, VA; Kevin Vanek, MS, and Carl Wright, WV. The competition offers cash awards totaling more than $4,000 in Jurors Choice, Seawall art, Brancusi, Honorable Mention, and People’s Choice. Pick up a ballot at the front desk and cast your ballot to help determine which artwork and artists receive the People’s Choice Award. Voting closes on August 1st. To Face the Unknown: Portsmouth and the Great War

Location: Portsmouth Art & Cultural Center

The History Division of the Portsmouth Museums will present: To face the Unknown, an exhibit that examines the effects of the Great War here at home. Come and see images and artifacts that tell growth, naval expansion and community support. The exhibit focuses on how WWI changed Portsmouth through phenomenal grown and experience relating to the home front effort; new housing communities and the way the military installations in Portsmouth grew and changed to support the war – installations like the St. Julien’s Creek Ammunition Depot, which expanded to become the place where tens of thousands of sea mines were filled and shipped. Forward 2 School Event Celebrates Students and Parents Community members join to support students for new school year.

Portsmouth Public Schools is pleased to partner with Portsmouth Schools Foundation and Portsmouth community partners for a Forward 2 School event on Saturday, August 19. The event is geared towards preparing parents and students for another year of academic success. Portsmouth students K-12 and their parents are encouraged to attend the event for a day filled of fun activities, games, food and motivational speakers.

Parents will have the opportunity to attend School Readiness Workshops. The workshop allows parents to learn how they can play an active role in homework and studying throughout the year.

Students can enjoy inflatable attractions and activities. Lunch will be served throughout the event at no cost. Portsmouth Fire and Rescue and Police Department will provide safety lessons. Bright Smiles will offer free dental screenings for students of all ages at the event. Free vouchers for haircuts and sneakers will also be available on a first- come, first-serve basis.

At the end of the event, each student will receive a free backpack filled with school supplies. All backpacks were donated through a community-wide drive held in July.

Students, parents/guardians, and community partners are encouraged to attend. The event is free and open to the public.

Resistance and Resilience: A Memoir Workshop of the Jim Crow Era

How did you, your family, and your community cope with the daily pressures and challenges of the Jim Crow Era? Join Lisa Hartz, the founder and director of the Seven Cities Writers Project, who is deeply committed to collecting and archiving this unique history, as you write in response to visual and literary prompts. These collected writings will be assembled into a volume and made available at the Portsmouth Colored Community Library Museum as a resource. Yoga in the Courtyard

Location: Portsmouth Art & Cultural Center

Join yoga instructor Neve in nature for a yoga class for all levels and ages.  No experience is required.  Neve teaches alignment based hatha yoga styles which focus on safety and relaxation.  Her humor and grace will have you smiling during and after class.  Come stretch, build strength, practice balance and enjoy being outside.  Please bring your own yoga mat to the courtyard and any other props you would like.  We practice on the bricks so if you want to double up your mat for more protection or a blanket feel free to do so.  Updates about the class will be posted on Facebook.  If it is raining, class will not take place.
