The portrait has long been muse for an artist’s creative endeavors.  From drawings, paintings and prints this exhibit offers a dynamic view into work created by regional artists.

Exhibit: Transitions – States of War, David Keefe & Combat Papers

Location: Portsmouth Art & Cultural Center

Opening Reception: Friday, July 1, 2016 5 – 8PM

Transitions feature large scale paintings, drawings, and prints by New Jersey artist and Marine Corps veteran David Keefe and artwork from the Combat Paper Project NJ.  From 2002 – 2009, Keefe served in the United States Marine Corps and competed a tour of combat as an infantry scout from 200 6 – 2007.  In addition, to creating his own art, Keefe teaches university art classes and directs Combat Paper, NJ a project that works directly in communities that are affected by warfare.  The project uses papermaking to transform the soldier’s military experience.  In these workshops, veterans use their service uniforms to create paper on which they can draw, paint, print or write about their wartime experience.

Coast Guard City Celebration

Location: Portsmouth Pavilion Park In December of 2010, the City of Portsmouth was designated a Coast Guard City. The City of Portsmouth celebrates this grand distinction each year with a community celebration. Road Rage Cutter 10K & Coast Guard 5K is a running event on August 6, 2016 in Portsmouth, VA.
